Mature tetranuclear encysts are the stage of infection, and the encysts enter the body with contaminated food and drinking water and excystation in the duodenum to form 2 trophozoites. If the trophozoite falls into the intestinal lumen and reaches the lower ileum or colonic lumen with food, it forms a cyst and is excreted with feces. Generally, only the cyst can be found in hard normal stools. Trophozoites can be found in the stool of people with diarrhea. The cyst is more resistant in the outside world and is the stage of transmission.

- Mice model of Giardia lamblia
Model animals: mice (SPF grade C57BL/6N mice, weight about 20 g)
Giardia lamblia source: cysts obtained by isolation and purification from fresh feces of patients and diluted with PBS.
Reproduction method: mice were gavaged with Giardia lamblia cysts. Before inoculation, mice were given metronidazole (methotrexate) to eliminate the original infected protozoa, followed by 3 d of fecal examination, and if the fecal examination was negative for cysts or trophozoites, each mouse was gavaged with encapsules.
Model characteristics: after inoculation, the incubation period of cyst discharge was 0-3d, with a cycle of 2-20d, peaking on day 6. Most of them showed interstitial bursa discharge. Pathological histology showed increased secretion on the mucosal surface of the small intestine; heavy inflammatory cell infiltration in the small intestine mucosa; edema in the interstitial tissue and submucosa; congestion of small blood vessels; and necrosis and division of the entire mucosal layer when the infection was severe. The infection rate is high (100%) compared with gerbils, which is convenient and economical.
Application: the animal model replicated by this method can be used for the study of Giardia and Giardiasis, drug screening, etc.
