Hydatidosis (hydatid disease), also known as echinococcosis, is a disease caused by the infection of humans with the larvae of Echinococcus granulosus. It is a zoonotic disease. Dogs are the final hosts, sheep and cattle are the intermediate hosts; humans become the intermediate hosts by accidentally ingesting the eggs and suffer from encystment disease. The eggs and nodules excreted in the feces can contaminate pastures, barns, hides, vegetables, soil, and water sources. When the eggs are swallowed by livestock (sheep, cattle) or people, the six hook larvae in the eggs hatch in the duodenum and burrow into the intestinal wall and enter the liver, lungs and other organs through the portal system, developing into encysted (echinococcal) larvae after about 5 months. If the animal's capsule is swallowed by a dog, its head segment grows into an adult worm in the dog's small intestine after 3 to 10 weeks. The adult worms are parasitized in the upper part of the small intestine (jejunum) of dogs and are fixed to the intestinal mucosa by parietal hooks and suckers, which do not cause symptoms in the host. In general, the course of cysticercosis is slow, with an incubation period of 1 to 30 years, and most patients often have no obvious symptoms. Clinically, echinococcosis is named according to the organ in which it is found, such as hepatocystosis, pulmonary encysticercosis, cerebral encysticercosis, osteocystosis, ocular encysticercosis, and others.
