Leishmania Culture Service
Leishmania protozoa refers to the trypanosomes of the genus Leishmania, which have a protoflagellate and amastigote life history. The former is parasitic in the digestive tract of arthropods (whiteflies) and the latter is parasitic in mononuclear macrophages of vertebrates and is transmitted by whiteflies. Leishmania protozoa infects humans, dogs, cats, cattle, horses, and sheep. Test animals such as rats, dolphins and monkeys are also susceptible.
Leishmaniasis is a human-animal parasitic disease caused by various protozoa of the genus Leishmania and is transmitted between arthropods and mammals. The clinical pathology of the disease is characterized by irregular high fever, emaciation, anemia, leukopenia, enlargement of the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes, and the formation of hypertrophic or ulcerative lesions in the skin and mucous membranes.

There are many strains of leishmania protozoa that can also be successfully cultured in a mixture of some mammalian cell cultures, such as MEM, RPMI 1640 or 199 medium.

Cultured in macrophage culture strain J774G8
Cultured in macrophages isolated directly from peripheral blood
