Plasmodium Culture Service
Plasmodium is a sporozoite transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes and is the causative agent of malaria. There are many species of Plasmodium, but there are four main species of plasmodium parasitizing humans, namely Plasmodium vivax Grassi & Feletti, Plasmodium malariae Laveran, Plasmodium falciparum Welch and Plasmodium ovale Stephens. The life histories of the four species of plasmodium parasitizing humans are basically the same, requiring two hosts, human and Anopheles. In humans, they are parasitized in liver cells and erythrocytes and undergo schizogony (proliferation). Development in the human body is divided into extra-erythrocytic stage (intrahepatocyte development) and intra-erythrocytic stage (intra-erythrocytic development and proliferation and male and female gametophyte formation).

Plasmodium culture can be divided into intra-erythrocytic and extra-erythrocytic stages. Of the four human Plasmodium species in the intra-erythrocytic phase culture only Plasmodium falciparum can be successfully cultured in vitro for long periods of time. We offer both intra-erythrocytic and extra-erythrocytic plasmodium cultures, so you have the flexibility to choose according to your needs.

Service Details
Culture medium: basic culture medium such as RPMI1640.
Sample type: "O" human erythrocytes, human serum.
Other substances: HEPES, glutathione, gas mixtures (3% O2, 4% CO2 and 93% N2) and sterile cell culture bottles.
Quality testing: we will also aspirate a small number of precipitated cells at regular intervals for staining with Kirschner's stain to see how the worms are growing.
